Founders CBS – Tripp Madry

A limited release Imperial stout “brewed with chocolate and coffee aged in maple syrup-bourbon barrels” has hit the market this week. Beer lovers all over the eastern US are scrambling to find even a single bottle of this brew with only 12,000 in production. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on this brew today, and opened a bottle promptly after returning home. Aromas of chocolate and fresh coffee jump right out of the glass. The taste is elegant and soft with very dominate chocolate flavors. Coffee and mellow bourbon booze are present in the background, but well integrated in the overall flavor. The last few sips leave a sweet maple and oak tannin that is almost undetectable for the duration of the drink. Quite a spectacular offering from Founders, good luck to all in their quest for this fantastic beer.

I’ve heard great things from fellow co-workers who have been in the past and I do believe it is metro accessible.

Elysian’s Avatar Jasmine IPA

First and foremost Elysian Brewing Company is a newcomer to the DMV market. Founded in 1996 in Seattle, their operation started in a brewpub; and has graduated to three production facilities/pubs throughout their time. I’ve also been told that some of the staple year round beers are brewed by New Belgium for eastern markets and vice-versa (i.e. New Belgium’s staples for western markets). Excuse my Reader’s Digest version of their history but you’ll be able to wikipedia it if your really interested. Elysian made their DC debut during DC Beer week, and Churchkey was lucky enough to feature nearly 20 of their best beers offered throughout the year.
We’ve recently received another keg of Avatar Jasmine to my delight. This delicious IPA may not be for the hop head, but it’s  my top third favorite American IPA after Ithaca’s Flower Power, and Troeg’s Nugget Nectar. The beer has a lovely orangey/ripe peach fuzz color to it and smells like an intertwined Jasime/Armarillo Hop Bush. It has a slight bitterness probably due to the usage of German hops for bittering. Finishes with a Goldilocks Jasmine Flavor (not to much not to little), and a slight zip of bitterness which is very approachable for many novice beer drinkers. If you have the chance to find any Avatar in bottles, give it a whirl and you won’t be sorry.

Richard Cheatham – ChurchKey DC – Draft Beer Review Mekong (RVA)

I recently visited Mekong in Richmond VA, a gem in the dismal craft beer scene of the once Confederate Capital. A Vietnamese restaurant, converted to a Belgian Beer Bar, and Richmond’s elite beer snob hang out. I believe this year is their 18th anniversary, and so each Thursday throughout the summer they feature a certain style. I stroll in on a Tuesday lunch hour to find some of the world greatest Sours still on tap. It has been many months since I’ve been able to indulge in Alvinne’s beers, and my taste buds were aghast when I realized what was on tap. First was the Wild Undressed. Alvinne’s base Sour beer, which they blend into other brews. It can rarely be found on draft, especially in the States. It is a rich mahogany red flanders ale that has a delectable sour candy sugar taste. A beer which any snob could be lost in for days. Next I moved onto Alvinne’s Cuvee Freddy, their dangerous Sour Stout. This beer has the Wild Undressed incorporated into it, but with a much richer, roastier, slightly bitter flavor. Watch out, because of few of these babies might make the hick at the end of the bar seem like America’ Next Top Model. Similar to Jolly Pumpkin’s Madrugada Obscura, but more roast and sour flavor. Needless to say if you can appreciate a good beer, sour or not; and are ever cruising through Richmond, defiantly cross Mekong off your bucket list. You won’t regret it!
